All
Same as the old rules, but in case anyone needs a reminder:

1. Be respectful of others and their opinions. Unless someone is foolish enough to admit that they like CSI: Miami. Then it's open season.

2. This goes double for political discussions. If anyone wants to talk about politics in this forum, they will do it like reasonable, mature, intelligent adults who are respectful of the opinions of others with a differing political ideology. Or they will be booted out of here.

3. No spoilers. If an episode has aired on the West Coast of the US (3 hours after the East Coast airing), nothing in that episode is considered a spoiler on this forum. If you go to some website and read that in an episode that will air three weeks from now Lorelai Gilmore will break up with Luke and leave Stars Hollow to herd puppies in Andalusia, that is a spoiler, and this is not the place to post about it.

4. Please read the thread before posting. Yes, some of them are long, but I assure you that they are highly entertaining. Failure to read the thread will only result in the forum regulars mocking you, and no one wants that. Anyone who posts something in any thread that makes it ludicrously obvious that they haven't bothered to read the thread before posting will have their account gagged for 24 hours. You've been warned.

5. Bit Torrents. I know some of you download Bit Torrent files. I'm not going to tell you not to, but please don't discuss torrent sites and downloading on this forum.

6. Respect the mods. There is no second guessing the forum moderators. Period. If any of them gag you, I'm sure you deserved it. Just in case you don't know, the Mods on this forum are:

  • Ted A'Zary (forum host)
  • Megan Thomas Bradner the Great
  • Dan "No longer the cranky mod - Today" Evans
  • Travis "Trekker" Johnson
  • James Lucas "No not Earl" Jones
  • Science "Spoiler-Free" Grrrl
  • Sean "Proppy" McArdle
  • Greg "Marathon Man" McElhatton
  • James "Manzi" Manzi

7. The Wire on HBO is the best show on television. Any discussion of Show X as being the "best show on TV" will be silently interpeted by all members of this forum to mean that Show X is "the best show on TV after The Wire of course, which we all acknowledge and completely agree is the best show on TV." If you aren't watching it already, watch The Wire. You won't regret it.

It's sad that the only things that are springing to mind in response are Trek and 'Wars quotes.

I'm so one-track.

Didn't we used to have a rule about signing your first name in your posts? I know SciGrl is our exception, but I just referred to someone as Asian Eyes in another thread because I didn't know who it was. It was weird.

i almost re-posted that rule, but a) i am the exception, hee, and b) with the diaspora i figured the big-sig crowd was sloughed-off and unless we got 'big' again it wasn't a problem.

But now that you've solved my hypocrisy problem:

Since the forum is starting to get more traffic and I no longer know everyone who's coming through, please either sign your posts with your real name or add your name so that it appears next to your screen name above your posts (To do this, go to your "My Forums" page, and click on "Preferences").

Not sure if anyone is prohibited, Ted will have to speak to that.

However, i will say you should make a good-faith effort to ensure that there is not already an extant thread (and now that there is no Delphi Basic caste, there is nothing keeping folks from doing a search first).

And there is a naming convention for seasons, people! It's right there in titles of the other threads, so you don't even have to remember anything!

Oh, and follow the way of the Sk8, i.e. no profanity in thread titles. Not even in the Deadwood thread!

Nope, just as Scigrrrl said, check to see if there's an existing thread first and you're golden.

I also prefer for the threads to be somewhat TV-related.

I don't see a general folder.

Ok, it's in the folder list, but no one has permissions to it which is why no one can post to it. I don't even know why it's there - maybe it's a beehive thing?

I don't think we need it, but I don't think I can delete a folder.

What about casting news as spoilers? I've seen some threads where it is allowed and others where it's acceptable if the actor's role isn't mentioned...

It's a judgment call.

I think using "if someone wanted to remain spoiler-free, would this information piss them off" is a good standard.

You can always link to a news item about casting with the caveat that the link contains spoilers.
