Can't find a thread dedicated to British Comics so that's what this is.  What I want to know just now is anyone reading The Judge Dredd Megazine anymore and is it any good?

Also, what other British Comics are there of note besides 2000AD?  I know there's a few fanzine style comics out there, but what are the best?

The Megazine has always been hit or miss, but it's pretty good right now.  There's a new Anderson story by Alan Grant and Boo Cook starting in a few months, and Simon Fraser's Lilly Mackenzie and the Mines of Charybdis, plus some new John Smith thing, so it's probably going to get better when they relaunch with issue #300.

Boo Cook doing interiors? Fuck me sideways, I'd like to see that.

What's the Megazine's remit these days? The last two times I looked at it - about 10 years ago and 15 years ago, respectively - it was first a kiddie-friendly, goreless version 2000AD and then a Preacher-reprinting sex 'n' violence special.

I thought it had always been a more adult orientated view into Dredd's world.  More risque stories and whatnot.  It seems now that 2000AD is aiming at the 15-30 market though, so don't know what the Megazine is like.  The recent bit about it in Tharg's editorial made it sound like more of comics magazine with articles and interviews.

Anyone know if these are any good or are they aimed low?

It definitely went through a kid-friendly phase back in the early 90s. Actually, I just checked and it launched in 1990, so I'm probably thinking about the earliest issues. Maybe it shifted to more adult stuff later on.

I'm almost certain you do. The Megazine has never been anything but a more mature comic, originally only about Dredd's world.

(Its first issue had America, for example)

The Meg is indeed much more of a magazine now, carrying articles on Brit (largely) comics, interviews with creators and film reviews. Usually 5 strips per issue, IIRC.

Its as adult-oriented as 2000AD is, and given that the tits, bums & "fuck"s are way up in 2K, that is to say 16+ these days.

Y'know, of the many stupid things about the movie adaptation, I think the stupidest might be that they put a judge helmet on the eagle on the judges' badge.

More stupid than including Rob Schneider as a wise-cracking side-kick to JUDGE DREDD?

They could have designed the badge so it looked like Sam the Eagle, complete with unibrow, and that would NOT have been more stupid than Rob Schneider being in that film.

I gave up reading it a good while ago (shortly after Alan Barnes left as editor, in fact). Have glanced at it once or twice since but didn't see anything worth staying on for. YMMV, obviously.

God, what a waste that film was. Every time I see it - and yes, I've seen it more than once - I'm struck by how amazing the production design and effects were. I'd kill to see a completely different Dredd film made using the same designs.

There's a Dredd film in pre-prod at the moment* with whoever produced SUNSHINE, if memory serves. Bits of production art pop up from time to time.

*I think, but with Rebellion, you never can tell exactly.

The pre-pro art Jock's done is dead nice.  I really hope it gets made.  Shame it's too late for Eastwood to play Dredd :P

You can never have enough Jock art. And he pops up in the oddest places! I has no idea he'd done stuff for Army of Two: The 40th Day until I started playing it.

Nope, had no idea. I actually haven't touched comics for about two years, mostly because the synopses and clowning on here are usually a lot more fun than the source material.

I reckon I'll pick up those Detective issues when they get traded, though. Who's writing it?

Greg Rucka, at least until Batwoman gets her own title.

You should really pick up the one(s) that comes before it too. Detective is easily the most beautiful looking comic being published.

Yeah, I'll start with Rucka's first issue. The writer tends to be a bigger sell for me than the artist anyway. Having sweet JHWIII art is just an incredible bonus.

I think it's some of Rucka's best work, too. DETECTIVE's arguably DC's best comic right now, and inarguably the best DC comic that doesn't have a Green Lantern in it. Further, it's entirely disconnected from everything else that's going on, so you can read it without giving a shit about Blackest Night or New Krypton or even the other Bat books.

Wow, didn't take long for the thread to drift right back to superheroes, huh?

Anyway, 2000 AD's having a very good phase right now.  The current lineup includes Dredd, Stickleback, Ampney Crucis, Nikolai Dante and The ABC Warriors and all five strips are really great.  I always enjoy 2000 AD more than any other comic, but it's especially strong right now.  You can buy the most recent issues from Clickwheel - start with Prog 2010 and then the next four issues, 1666-1669 will get you up to date with the latest stories.

Did anyone read Craddlegrave in 2000AD last year? I thought that was really good. Though I think I would have preferred if it was done completely straight with no supernatural stuff at all.

I dunno - I found the dialogue really forced.  It had some good moments and some interesting art - nothing special.  I preferred John Smith's Leatherjack.

I've just dropped it, mainly because I can't stand the cod-Victoriana of Stickleback and the casting of real people as likenesses in Ampney Cruces was pulling me right out of the story. Dredd is on a real roll at the moment though, I'll definitely get the Tour of Duty collection when it eventually comes out.
