An alternative to panto... (18 posts)

Just thought I'd pick the brains of people on here - I wrote a fic for the pillowtalk kink meme request, and I'm a bit stuck.

There's a section in there where Phoenix starts talking about plays that he was in at university, and he mentions being in a Christmas pantomime, at which point Edgeworth looks a little blank because he's not familiar with the concept. It goes on from there, but the point of this was to give Edgeworth the opening to say "It sounds very different from Othello", leading into a different conversation.

Which was all well and good till my beta pointed out that America doesn't have pantos!

Apart from being sad that you guys are missing out on the fantastic-ness that is panto, I am left with a dilemma - what can I sub in there instead that American fans will understand? I just need some type of silly show with good guys, bad guys and monsters that a university drama society would be likely to put on (that Edgeworth would never, EVER watch XD).

Suggestions much appreciated!

How about a musical?

Gayness aside (stop laughing everyone!) I can't see Edgeworth singing along to "Whip Crackaway" somehow?

OMG, PHOENIX COULD BE FRANK N. FURTER FROM LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - PRICELESS!!!

But I think that would break people XD

But yes, a musical is a possibility! I think even the more serious ones like Phantom of the Opera Edgeworth might not have seen. He strikes me as more of a classical theatre kinda guy.

Speaking of musicals, maybe it could be a rather well known musical that Edgeworth wouldn't know? Maybe a comedy? And oh God, the thought of Phoenix having anything to do with Avenue Q is a...hilarious one.

You people are making me want to listen to the Ultimate Broadway cd again.

Last time I did that, whole worlds bent and broke under the sheer amount of crack produced during the happy-musical-theatre trance. Including one fun little doodle that may or may not have had Edgeworth singing them in a shower.

...Hah. Ahahah. Yes. I've already got an idea. Time to get the sketchpad.

It's a tempting image of Edgey. I've not met many gay men who could resist a show tune ;)

As an alternative to panto -- what about a roast? They're not generally public affairs, but a drama club would be likely to do one.
Or an improv/comedy sketch night, also a common college pastime.

A musical or musical revue could also work.

From what little I know of panto, having never seen any, there's no direct equivalent that's common across the US. But *lots* of groups/clubs would do a show like that; they just wouldn't call it panto. Often as charity benefits.

Roasts?

Basically, someone is picked to be the subject of the evening. Everyone else gets to take turns picking on them in a humorous fashion. Telling stories, cracking jokes, playing pranks, etc. etc.

Look up the word "roast" in conjunction with "dean martin". You should find a fair amount of info.
